Newly redesigned for improved longevity! This kit has been redesigned and re-engineered for the 1993-1997 Firebird, 1998-2002 Firebird and late style (Late 2000-2004) C5 Corvette plastic housing motors. Now upgraded to include a newly engineered steel support brace with a special plastic bushing. I have noticed a few glue joint failures in these plastic housing motors. Glue joint failures happen because the plastic housing of the headlight motors does not take any adhesive well. The glue joint surface is small and once installed it has to take a tremendous force that occurs when the headlight gets full open and full closed and stops abruptly. For these headlight gear repair kits I have added a special stamped steel support brace with a plastic bushing. The brace and bushing does two things. It applies a slight pressure against the side cover to help eliminate side cover glue failures. Most importantly it adds a new bearing surface to support the shaft. This removes all the pressure of the shaft from the side cover by transferring it to this new brace. Once installed this repair should easily last the life of the car. The early (97-99 and some early 2000) Corvettes have an aluminum housing and do not need this special brace. Those headlight motor assemblies are very heavy duty and only require a new gear.

If your headlight actuation unit makes a grinding noise when turned on or turned off (usually this will happen at the full open or full closed position) this is the classic symptom of a bad headlight gear. This kit will repair your headlight motor. If you do not repair or replace your headlight actuation unit once this begins to happen, very soon the headlight will fail to rise at all. If your car has the factory alarm/remote door locks the headlights may act funny if you have a headlight actuation unit that is in need of repair.

In most of the Firebirds and Corvettes with a plastic gear, by the time the gear has failed the OEM black rubber bumper inside the gear is also in poor condition and should be replaced. This kit includes an aftermarket rubber gear bumper that is molded of a tougher rubber than OEM.

The OEM plastic gear and the rubber bumper are the weak parts in these headlight actuation units. Once rebuilt with the new heavy duty CNC brass gear and aftermarket rubber bumper the headlight actuation unit will be better than new and should last the life of your car.

Kit Contents: CNC machined brass headlight gear, aftermarket rubber gear bumper, T-shaped housing brace with plastic bushing and washer, packet of synthetic grease, urethane packet, mixing stick, installation instructions. One kit repairs one headlight actuation unit.

  1. Design seems to make sense 4

I've replaced my headlight motors and gears so many times i can't even count. I've replaced the gears before with brass, but eventually the casing and seal break. This T-brace member might do the trick. It seems to make sense that the torque of the motor is now transferred to the T-brace and not the weak glued seal. Only time will tell.

I bought and flipped 2 plastic ones being cheap until I finally bought 2 of this kit. It was easy to install and have been working perfect ever since. Shipping was really fast also, especially since going to the Canadian east coast

  3. As advertised 4

Very easy to assemble once you get motor out. I installed this in a new motor and my new motor has 3 screws holding the cover over the gears. So I did not have to use the adhesive sent with setup.

After two failed attempts from replacing the plastic gears I ordered this. Instructions are well written and detailed. Everything went together perfect and best of all no more grinding headlight motor gear!

I want to Thank Hawks Motorsport for the Very fast delivery of my part. I live on the west coast and I received my part in 2 days. Also, the part came with everything needed to replace the broken headlamp motor gear. The instructions were very clear and detailed. I never replaced a broken headlamp gear before, with the help of my wife we did it. No more grinding noise, and they work. The gear fit perfectly, no alterations required. Great Product. I’m so Happy that Hawks Motorsport is in business because they have come through when I needed that part for my WS6. Again, Thank You Bruce.

Great product -- the gear is easy to install, and even easier if you use an air ratchet due to the tight quarters in by the headlight. Look for a youtube video that shows how to get to the bolts.

  9. Works great 5

My pass side light started grinding (again). I had previously found a good deal on replacing the entire motor. That deal is long gone. This package has everything you need: brass gear, bumper, T-brace, shim, grease, and 2-part adhesive. Installation is straightforward. If you have a pneumatic ratchet, it comes in handy because you have to torque the bolt all the way off/on, and there's not much room in there for you hand unless you remove the entire assembly. I've seen brass gears chewed up before, so if it happens remember you can remove the elevator arm and manually turn the motor so the gear is positioned 180-degrees from its original position.

  10. Go with this one! 5

Replaced my gear once with a regular steel one... months later it started doing the same thing! Opened it up amd the teeth were chewed. The brass one is much better, and it came with awesome instructions and detailed parts list. Gave it a week before I reviewed it, and this kit works great!
