This new replacement center console 4 speed shifter boot retainer ring is for use on all 1970 - 1981 Camaro and Firebird Trans Am models.
It holds the lower shift boot and accordion upper shift boot into place onto the shifter arm. This is a new replacement GM Authorized reproduction from OER and finished in a gloss black.
These tend to rust and become weak over the lifespan of 5 years and is a good idea to replace then you are restoring your interior, replacing your shifter boots, or shifter itself. When this becomes weak and does not keep a strong grip on the upper and lower shift boots they will not provide a secure seal. This can create fumes into the cabin, excess heat or cold into the cabin. Another issue is direct noise from your driveline and road noise entering the cabin. All of which can be prevented simply with installing good shifter boots and a new ring such as this.
