T-tops & Parts 1975- 1981 Firebird / Trans Am

Today’s history lesson: “In the middle 1970’s” General Motors would begin to work with outside companies to bring the Firebird / Trans Am line an option which Corvette owners were already enjoying, removable glass T-tops. They would sign contracts with Hurst Hatches, and Cars and Concepts. With those contracts came the blue skies, the wind in your hair, and well leaks everywhere. Hurst would sub contract orders to American T-tops as Hurst install locations struggled to keep up with demand. By late 1977 GM had said “enough is enough” and released the Norwood and Van Nuys factory installed “Fisher” single handle release. This was a true General Motors production line installed T-top.

Now decades later clients of Hawks Motorsports realize the need for replacement parts for all 4 styles of the T-tops. Hurst Design 1 and design 2, Cars and Concepts, American T-tops and Fisher Body T-tops. While beloved by owners and becoming an icon of the mid -70’s through the end of the 4rth Generation Firebird and T/A run in 2002 one thing was clear. T-tops and the Trans Am like ole Burt himself and his “Black Smokey & the Bandit Trans Am called “Trigger” have become American icons and a portion of most enthusiasts youth.
