TREMEC Magnum-F Transmission

The Magnum-F was developed as a high-capacity replacement and conversion transmission for fourth-generation GM F-Body vehicles. Its F-Body extension housing provides the appropriate shifter location, transmission-mount position and torque-arm provisions for Camaro and Firebird installations.

Transmission specifications include:

  • Six synchronized forward gears
  • Double-overdrive configuration
  • Up to 700 lb-ft transmission torque capacity
  • Maximum rated input speed of 7,800 rpm
  • 26-spline input shaft
  • 31-spline output shaft
  • Hydraulic clutch release
  • Electronic vehicle-speed output
  • Reverse-inhibitor solenoid
  • Reverse-light switch
  • Approximately 140-pound dry transmission weight

The 700 lb-ft figure is the transmission manufacturer’s rating. The usable capacity of the completed drivetrain also depends on the selected clutch, flywheel, driveshaft, rear axle, vehicle weight, tire traction, installation quality and intended use.

Transmission-Ratio Selection

Two first-gear selections are available:

  • 2.66 first gear: Provides a taller first gear and closer-ratio performance character
  • 2.97 first gear: Provides greater starting-line torque multiplication and may work better with milder rear-axle gearing

The selected first-gear option should be matched to the engine combination, rear-axle ratio, tire diameter and intended vehicle use.

TREMEC has produced Magnum-F transmissions with different fifth- and sixth-gear combinations. Confirm the complete transmission model and all six ratios associated with the selected option before ordering if a specific overdrive ratio is required.

Correct Applications

  • 1993 Chevrolet Camaro with Gen II LT1 V8
  • 1994 Chevrolet Camaro with Gen II LT1 V8
  • 1995 Chevrolet Camaro with Gen II LT1 V8
  • 1996 Chevrolet Camaro with Gen II LT1 or LT4 V8
  • 1997 Chevrolet Camaro with Gen II LT1 or LT4 V8
  • 1993 Pontiac Firebird with Gen II LT1 V8
  • 1994 Pontiac Firebird with Gen II LT1 V8
  • 1995 Pontiac Firebird with Gen II LT1 V8
  • 1996 Pontiac Firebird with Gen II LT1 or LT4 V8
  • 1997 Pontiac Firebird with Gen II LT1 or LT4 V8
  • Camaro Z28 and compatible SS applications
  • Firebird Formula, Trans Am and compatible Firehawk applications
  • Vehicles originally equipped with an automatic or applicable manual transmission, according to the selected ordering configuration

Enter the vehicle’s year, make and model and select the appropriate application when ordering. The package uses a year-specific crossmember.

A reproduction shifter plate is available as an ordering option for 1997 vehicles. Select this option if the original interior configuration requires the corresponding plate.

Engine Restrictions

This package is specifically engineered around the Gen II LT1/LT4 engine architecture used in the 1993-1997 F-Body.

It is not intended for:

  • Camaro or Firebird V6 engines
  • 1998-2002 LS1 engines
  • Other LS-series engine swaps
  • Gen V direct-injected LT1 or LT4 engines
  • 1982-1992 TPI, TBI or carbureted engine applications
  • Vehicles requiring a different bellhousing or clutch-release arrangement

Hawks offers separate Magnum-F packages and conversion components for LS-powered and other F-Body combinations.

Hydraulic Clutch Conversion

Earlier LT1 F-Bodies used a different clutch-release arrangement from the later LS-powered F-Body. This conversion package supplies the components needed to use the Magnum-F’s hydraulic release system, including:

  • GM hydraulic slave cylinder and throwout bearing
  • Hawks adjustable master cylinder
  • Clutch-fluid reservoir
  • Six-speed pedal set
  • Bellhousing and spacer
  • Pilot bearing
  • Clutch and flywheel components

The adjustable master cylinder allows the installer to establish the correct hydraulic travel. Slave-cylinder clearance, clutch release and pedal operation must be measured and verified before the vehicle is driven.

Driveshaft and Electronic Integration

The Magnum-F uses a 31-spline output shaft rather than the 27-spline output used by an original F-Body T56. A compatible 31-spline slip yoke is included.

TREMEC advises that Magnum-F installations may require driveshaft-length changes. The installer must measure the completed drivetrain and verify:

  • Driveshaft overall length
  • Slip-yoke engagement
  • Rear universal-joint compatibility
  • Driveshaft operating angles
  • Clearance throughout suspension travel
  • Driveshaft strength for the intended power level

Do not order or modify a driveshaft solely from generic published measurements.

Pigtails are included for the electronic vehicle-speed sensor, reverse lights and reverse-lockout solenoid. Final wiring, circuit integration and vehicle-speed calibration remain part of the installation. ECM programming or speedometer calibration may be necessary depending on the vehicle and rear-axle configuration.

Installation Information

Professional installation by a technician familiar with fourth-generation F-Body drivetrains and hydraulic clutch systems is recommended.

Before installation:

  • Confirm that the vehicle has the correct Gen II LT1 or LT4 engine
  • Verify the selected transmission ratio
  • Confirm the correct year-specific crossmember
  • Inspect the crankshaft pilot-bearing bore
  • Inspect the rear main seal and surrounding engine components
  • Verify clutch and flywheel compatibility
  • Measure hydraulic release-bearing clearance
  • Inspect the torque arm and rear-axle mounting points
  • Plan the required wiring and speedometer calibration
  • Measure for the completed driveshaft only after the drivetrain is positioned

Test-fit the transmission, bellhousing, crossmember, torque-arm bracket, shifter and interior components before completing final assembly.

TREMEC specifies a break-in period of approximately 500 miles using varied vehicle speeds and engine rpm. Avoid hard launches, high-rpm shifts and sustained heavy loading during the break-in period.

Use only lubricant approved by TREMEC for the selected Magnum-F transmission. TREMEC identifies its HP-MTF fluid and specified Dexron III-type fluids for Magnum-series applications. Confirm the current fluid recommendation and required capacity before filling the transmission.

A mandatory crate fee applies to this package because of its size and shipping requirements.
