Product Description:
Hawks Motorsports is pleased to offer our clients the following.
This TREMEC Magnum XL 6-speed manual-transmission conversion kit is designed for 2010-2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS and 2012-2015 Camaro ZL1 models. It replaces the factory TR-6060 arrangement with a stronger, performance-focused transmission package featuring a rigid direct-mounted shifter and up to 700 lb-ft of rated transmission torque capacity.
The Magnum XL uses an extended-length tail housing to position the direct-mounted shifter correctly for late-model vehicles originally equipped with a semi-remote shifter. This arrangement improves shift precision, consistency and driver feedback for high-performance street, drag-racing, autocross and road-course applications.

TREMEC Magnum XL Specifications
The Magnum XL is based on the high-capacity TREMEC Magnum/TR-6060 architecture and is manufactured from new OEM-quality components.
Major transmission specifications include:
- Six synchronized forward gears
- Double-overdrive configuration
- Up to 700 lb-ft transmission torque capacity
- Maximum rated input speed of 7,800 rpm
- 26-spline input shaft
- 31-spline output shaft
- Hydraulic clutch release configuration
- Electronic vehicle-speed output
- Extended-length tail housing
- Single direct-mounted shifter position
- Shifter location approximately 28.46 inches from the transmission face
- Detached bellhousing design
- Approximately 150-pound dry weight
- Approximately 3.66-quart fluid capacity
The detached bellhousing configuration allows the package to be matched with an appropriate aluminum bellhousing or SFI-rated steel scattershield.
The 700 lb-ft figure is the transmission manufacturer’s maximum torque rating. It is not a horsepower rating or a guarantee for the entire completed drivetrain. Vehicle weight, clutch capacity, driveshaft strength, rear-axle components, tire traction, driving conditions and installation quality all affect the safe operating capacity of the vehicle.
Available Gear Ratios
Two Magnum XL ratio combinations are available:
| Gear | Close-Ratio Set | Wide-Ratio Set |
|---|---|---|
| First | 2.66 | 2.97 |
| Second | 1.78 | 2.10 |
| Third | 1.30 | 1.46 |
| Fourth | 1.00 | 1.00 |
| Fifth | 0.80 | 0.80 |
| Sixth | 0.63 | 0.63 |
| Reverse | 2.90 | 2.90 |
The 2.66 first-gear combination provides a closer ratio progression and corresponds with the general gearing arrangement used in the Camaro ZL1 TR-6060.
The 2.97 first-gear combination provides greater initial torque multiplication and wider lower-gear spacing. It can be useful for vehicles with milder rear-axle ratios, heavier street configurations or combinations that benefit from additional starting-line multiplication.
Both versions provide direct drive in fourth gear and double overdrive through fifth and sixth.
Select the transmission ratio according to the engine’s usable rpm range, rear-axle ratio, tire diameter, vehicle weight and intended use.
Direct-Mounted Shifter Design
The factory fifth-generation Camaro TR-6060 uses a semi-remote shifter arrangement. Although the semi-remote design helps isolate noise and vibration, movement within the linkage can reduce shift precision during aggressive driving.
The Magnum XL’s extended tail housing positions a rigid direct-mounted shifter farther rearward without relying on the original semi-remote linkage. This design provides:
- More direct driver input
- Shorter and more consistent shift action
- Reduced linkage movement
- Improved high-rpm shift control
- More precise gear engagement during performance driving
A rigid direct-mounted shifter can transmit more mechanical sound and vibration into the passenger compartment than the original isolated semi-remote system. This characteristic should be considered when planning a primarily street-driven Camaro.
Manual-Transmission Upgrade Applications
This kit is primarily intended as a performance upgrade for Camaro SS and ZL1 models already equipped with a manual transmission.
It may also form the foundation of a larger automatic-to-manual conversion, but the published package should not be treated as a complete automatic-conversion kit without confirmation. Vehicles originally equipped with an automatic transmission can require additional pedals, clutch hydraulics, wiring, programming, interior components and vehicle-specific parts.
Complete the quote form with the original transmission type so Hawks Motorsports can identify the correct package requirements.
Electronic and Driveline Integration
The Magnum XL uses an electronic vehicle-speed output. Speedometer operation, engine-control functions, reverse lights and reverse-lockout operation must be integrated with the vehicle’s existing electrical system.
Programming or calibration may be required to maintain correct speedometer readings and related vehicle functions.
The Magnum XL also uses a 31-spline slip-yoke output. The completed drivetrain must be measured before driveshaft requirements are finalized.
The installer must verify:
- Driveshaft length
- Slip-yoke engagement
- Driveshaft flange compatibility
- Universal-joint compatibility
- Driveshaft operating angles
- Transmission and differential alignment
- Clearance throughout suspension travel
- Driveshaft capacity for the intended power level
Do not modify or order a driveshaft from generic published measurements alone.
Installation Information
Professional installation by a technician experienced with fifth-generation Camaro drivetrains is recommended.
Before installation:
- Confirm the vehicle’s year and submodel
- Verify the engine and original transmission
- Select the correct gear-ratio combination
- Confirm the clutch and flywheel configuration

Break-In and Lubrication
TREMEC specifies a 500-mile break-in period for Magnum-series transmissions.
During break-in:
- Drive at varied vehicle speeds and engine rpm
- Avoid high-rpm shifts
- Avoid drag-style launches
- Fully disengage the clutch during every shift
- Do not force the transmission into gear
- Investigate grinding or incomplete clutch release immediately
The current Hawks package lists transmission fluid among the included components. Use only the supplied or currently approved TREMEC lubricant and fill the transmission according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
