Hawks Motorsports is pleased to offer our clients the following: new reproduction six-speed manual shifter plate for the 1982-1989 Chevrolet Camaro, Hawks Restoration Parts #8289MSP-6SPD.

Give your third-generation Camaro six-speed conversion a clean, factory-style center-console appearance. This reproduction is modeled after the original Camaro five-speed shifter plate but features an updated six-speed shift pattern for T56 and TR6060 transmission swaps.

The molded black plate uses white shift-pattern lettering to coordinate with the earlier third-generation Camaro interior. A vinyl shift boot and ashtray lid are installed, creating a more finished alternative to modifying a worn original plate or covering the factory five-speed pattern with a separate overlay.

The vehicle’s existing removable ashtray insert must be transferred to the reproduction plate.

Fitment Applications

1982 Chevrolet Camaro

Fits six-speed conversion projects using the original-style Camaro center console and a compatible shifter location.

The 1982 Camaro did not originally use this six-speed pattern. This plate is intended as an upgraded conversion component.

1983-1984 Chevrolet Camaro

Fits applicable Sport Coupe, Berlinetta and Z28 six-speed conversion projects using the compatible center console.

1985-1987 Chevrolet Camaro

Fits applicable Sport Coupe, Berlinetta, Z28 and IROC-Z six-speed conversion projects using the compatible center console.

1988 Chevrolet Camaro

Fits applicable Sport Coupe and IROC-Z six-speed conversion projects using the compatible center console.

1989 Chevrolet Camaro

Fits applicable RS and IROC-Z six-speed conversion projects using the compatible center console.

Important Fitment Requirements

  • Designed for Chevrolet Camaro center consoles
  • Intended for six-speed manual-transmission conversions
  • Compatible with properly configured T56 and TR6060 swap applications
  • Shifter position must align with the console opening
  • Transmission tunnel modifications may affect fitment
  • Requires adequate clearance through all six forward gears and reverse
  • Existing removable ashtray insert must be transferred
  • Does not convert the vehicle to a six-speed transmission by itself

Designed for Six-Speed Conversions

No 1982-1989 Camaro was originally produced with a six-speed manual transmission. Part #8289MSP-6SPD is an OEM-plus conversion component designed to give an upgraded drivetrain a finished appearance inside the original third-generation Camaro console.

It is appropriate for projects such as:

  • T56 six-speed conversions
  • TR6060 six-speed conversions
  • LS-powered third-generation Camaro builds
  • Modern manual-transmission swaps
  • Street-performance restomods
  • Track-oriented Camaro builds
  • Replacement of a modified original console plate

The plate does not determine transmission placement. The engine, bellhousing, transmission, crossmember, shifter and tunnel configuration must position the shift lever correctly within the console opening.

T56 and TR6060 Compatibility

This plate is designed for T56 and TR6060 six-speed conversion applications, but those transmission families were produced in several configurations.

Shifter position can vary according to:

  • Transmission model
  • Tailhousing design
  • Remote or direct-mount shifter
  • Engine placement
  • Bellhousing selection
  • Transmission crossmember
  • Transmission-tunnel modifications
  • Aftermarket shifter assembly

Test-fit the drivetrain and verify the final shifter location before permanently modifying the console or completing the interior.

White Shift-Pattern Lettering

The white six-speed shift pattern is designed to coordinate with the lettering used in 1982-1989 Camaro interiors.

Although the plate can physically fit compatible 1990-1992 Camaro consoles, those later models used yellow console lettering. Hawks Restoration Parts #9092MSP-6SPD is the corresponding yellow-text six-speed plate for a more model-year-appropriate 1990-1992 appearance.

  • 1982-1989 six-speed conversion: White-text #8289MSP-6SPD
  • 1990-1992 six-speed conversion: Yellow-text #9092MSP-6SPD

Complete Plate Versus Shift-Pattern Overlay

This product is a complete reproduction shifter-plate assembly with a six-speed pattern, shift boot and ashtray lid.

It is different from Hawks Restoration Parts #82896SP, which is a semi-gloss black vinyl overlay with white six-speed lettering designed to cover the shift-pattern area of an existing plate.

Choose the complete #8289MSP-6SPD plate when the original console plate or boot is cracked, worn, missing or unsuitable for reuse. The overlay may be appropriate when the existing plate remains serviceable and only the displayed shift pattern needs to be changed.

  • One white six-speed shift pattern
  • One installed vinyl shift boot
  • One installed ashtray lid

Restores a Finished Console Appearance

Six-speed conversions frequently leave the center console looking unfinished when the original five-speed plate has been cut, modified or fitted with a worn boot.

Part #8289MSP-6SPD is suitable for:

  • Replacing a damaged original shifter plate
  • Eliminating an incorrect five-speed shift pattern
  • Finishing a T56 conversion
  • Finishing a TR6060 conversion
  • Completing an LS-powered Camaro restomod
  • Replacing a torn or missing shift boot
  • Replacing a damaged ashtray lid
  • Creating an OEM-plus six-speed console appearance
  • Completing a street, show or track-oriented build

Ashtray Fitment Notes

The ashtray lid is installed, but the original removable ashtray insert must be transferred from the vehicle.

Test-fit the insert and lid before completing installation. The ashtray tabs may require slight adjustment so the insert and lid sit evenly with the top of the plate.

Make small adjustments and check the fit frequently. Do not force the ashtray lid closed.

Installation Notes

Complete the major drivetrain positioning work before final installation of the shifter plate.

Before installing the plate:

  1. Confirm the final engine and transmission position.
  2. Verify that the shift lever is centered in the console opening.
  3. Move the transmission through all six forward gears and reverse.
  4. Check the lever’s clearance against the plate and console.
  5. Confirm that the leather boot does not pull excessively in any gear.
  6. Compare the plate with the original console opening.
  7. Transfer and test-fit the removable ashtray insert.
  8. Adjust the ashtray tabs slightly if necessary.
  9. Confirm that the lid opens and closes without binding.
  10. Verify that the plate sits evenly against the console.

Transmission swaps may require additional fabrication or adjustment. Do not use the shifter plate to force an incorrectly positioned shifter into alignment.

Do not overtighten the attachment points. Excessive pressure can damage molded interior components.

Care and Cleaning

Clean the molded plate with a soft microfiber cloth and an automotive interior cleaner approved for plastic surfaces.

Use an automotive leather-care product sparingly on the shift boot. Avoid soaking the boot seams or allowing cleaner to collect around the plate opening.

Do not use harsh solvents, abrasive pads or aggressive scrubbing around the white shift-pattern lettering.

Frequently Asked Questions

What vehicles fit Hawks Restoration Parts #8289MSP-6SPD?

It is designed primarily for 1982-1989 Chevrolet Camaro six-speed conversion projects using the original-style center console and a compatible shifter position.

Is this an original factory Camaro part?

No. It is a new reproduction conversion component modeled after the original five-speed Camaro shifter plate and updated with a six-speed pattern.

Did the 1982-1989 Camaro originally have a six-speed transmission?

No. The six-speed application represents a transmission conversion rather than an original factory configuration.

Is this plate designed for a T56 swap?

Yes. It is designed for compatible T56 six-speed conversion applications.

Will it work with a TR6060 transmission?

It is designed for compatible TR6060 conversions, but shifter position varies among transmission and swap configurations. Verify the final shifter location before installation.

Does this plate guarantee that my T56 or TR6060 will fit?

No. The plate finishes the console area but does not position the transmission or shifter. The drivetrain must be correctly installed and aligned first.

Is this suitable for an LS-swapped Camaro?

Yes. It is intended for LS-powered and other six-speed Camaro conversion projects when the shifter aligns with the original-style console opening.

What color is the shift-pattern lettering?

The six-speed shift pattern uses white lettering appropriate for an earlier third-generation Camaro interior.

Does it fit a 1990-1992 Camaro?

It can physically fit a compatible 1990-1992 Camaro console, but those years used yellow lettering. Part #9092MSP-6SPD provides the more appropriate later-model appearance.

Is the shift boot included?

Yes. The shift boot is installed in the shifter plate.

Is the ashtray lid included?

Yes. The ashtray lid is installed.

Is the removable ashtray insert included?

No. The original removable ashtray insert must be transferred from the vehicle.

Is this the same as the six-speed overlay?

No. This is a complete reproduction shifter-plate assembly. Part #82896SP is a separate vinyl overlay for an existing serviceable plate.

Will it fit an original five-speed Camaro?

The plate fits the compatible console location but displays a six-speed pattern. It should be used when the vehicle has been converted to a six-speed transmission.

Will it fit an automatic Camaro?

It is not intended for an automatic-transmission configuration. A complete manual-transmission conversion and compatible console arrangement are required.

Does this include the transmission or conversion components?

No. This listing is for the console shifter-plate assembly with its installed leather boot and ashtray lid.

Is a shift knob included?

No. The shift lever and shift knob are separate.
