Product Description:

Hawks Motorsports is pleased to offer our clients the following universal steering-wheel puller tool set for vehicles equipped with compatible four-inch steering-wheel hubs. Designed to remove a compatible steering wheel from its tapered or splined steering shaft without hammering, prying or pulling directly against the steering column, this compact tool set applies controlled pressure through its center screw while the puller yoke remains secured to the steering-wheel hub.

The puller is manufactured from heat-treated material for strength and includes standard- and machine-thread pulling screws for use with several common steering-wheel hub configurations. Its compact size makes it easy to store in a toolbox and useful for steering-wheel, horn-component and steering-column service.

Always confirm that the steering-wheel hub has suitable threaded puller holes and that the supplied screws match those threads before applying pressure.

Fitment Applications

This is a universal service tool rather than a model-specific restoration component.

It is intended for steering wheels with:

  • An approximately four-inch hub
  • Accessible threaded puller holes
  • Puller-hole threads matching one of the supplied screw sets
  • Adequate clearance for the puller yoke and pressure screw

It may be useful when servicing compatible Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Trans Am and other classic GM steering wheels, but compatibility must be determined by the hub and puller-hole configuration—not solely by vehicle year or model.

Installation and Use Notes

  1. Keep the front wheels and steering wheel in the straight-ahead position.
  2. Disconnect the vehicle battery before working around horn or electrical components.
  3. Remove the horn cap and steering-wheel retaining nut according to the vehicle’s service procedure.
  4. Leave the retaining nut loosely threaded onto the shaft when appropriate to help protect the shaft threads.
  5. Select pulling screws that match the threaded holes in the steering-wheel hub.
  6. Thread both pulling screws evenly into the hub.
  7. Position the pressure screw over the steering shaft.
  8. Tighten the center pressure screw gradually until the wheel releases.
  9. Do not use mismatched screws or force screws into damaged threads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this puller fit every steering wheel?

No. It is intended for compatible steering wheels with approximately four-inch hubs and suitable threaded puller holes.

Can it be used on a Camaro or Firebird?

It can be used when the vehicle’s steering-wheel hub and puller-hole threads match the tool. Compatibility should be confirmed by inspecting the wheel after removing the center horn components.

Why should a steering-wheel puller be used?

A puller applies controlled, even pressure. This reduces the risk of damaging the steering shaft, steering column, steering wheel or interior compared with hammering or prying.

Are multiple screw sizes included?

Yes. The set contains three sets of pulling screws, including standard- and machine-threaded options.

Is it suitable for professional use?

The puller is heat-treated and suitable for normal automotive steering-wheel service. Inspect the yoke, pressure screw and pulling screws before every use.

Can it be used if the steering wheel has no threaded puller holes?

No. This style of puller requires suitable threaded holes in the steering-wheel hub. It should not be improvised on an incompatible wheel.
