Hawks Motorsports is proud to offer our clients this : Bright Red Powder Coated 1964-1977 GM A-Body 1-1/4-Inch Solid Front Sway Bar from UMI Performance.

UMI Performance 4035 is engineered for GM A-body owners looking to reduce front-end body roll, improve steering response, and produce flatter, more controlled cornering without making the vehicle uncomfortable during normal street driving.

This fixed-rate front sway bar measures 1-1/4 inches, or approximately 32mm, in diameter and is manufactured from solid 4140 chromoly steel. Each bar is formed as a one-piece assembly and CNC-bent for consistent geometry and proper alignment with the factory-style A-body mounting locations.

UMI publishes a 530 lb/in deflection rating for part #4035, making it an excellent multipurpose handling upgrade for restored street cars, Pro-Touring builds, autocross vehicles, road-course cars, and performance-oriented daily drivers.

The standard kit includes one solid front sway bar, two polyurethane end-link assemblies, and two greaseable polyurethane frame bushings with clamshell-style clamps, in  UMI’s durable bright red powder-coated finish.

UMI 4035 fits both generations of the classic GM A-body platform, including applicable 1964-1972 and 1973-1977 Buick, Chevrolet, GMC, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac models. Applications include the Chevelle, Malibu, El Camino, Monte Carlo, Laguna, Skylark, GS, Regal, Century, Cutlass, 442, GTO, LeMans, Grand Am, and other vehicles listed below.

Important Fitment Notes

  • This listing is intended for the classic 1964-1977 GM A-body platform.
  • The vehicle must retain factory-style front sway-bar frame mounting points and lower-control-arm end-link locations.
  • This is a fixed-rate, non-adjustable sway bar.
  • UMI’s supplied end links are designed for most factory, reasonably raised, and reasonably lowered ride heights.
  • The end links are compatible with many standard-spindle, tall-spindle, and tall-ball-joint combinations.
  • Excessively raised or lowered vehicles may require different-length end links.
  • UMI permits shortening the supplied end-link spacer sleeves by up to 3/4 inch when shorter end links are required.
  • End-link position and angle must be evaluated with the vehicle resting at normal ride height.
  • The end links do not need to be perfectly vertical for the sway bar to operate correctly.
  • Installing the bar upside down can cause tie-rod clearance problems.
  • Check clearance around the idler arm, tie rods, brake lines, control arms, oil pan, and surrounding components before driving.
  • Vehicles with larger-diameter idler-arm pivots may benefit from UMI A-body sway-bar relocation bracket #4068.
  • Optional UMI billet-aluminum 1-1/4-inch sway-bar frame brackets, part #0047, are available separately.
  • This application range should not be confused with the later 1978-1988 GM G-body platform.

Additional Official Interchange

UMI Performance also catalogs part #4035 for:

  • 1970-1981 Chevrolet Camaro
  • 1970-1981 Pontiac Firebird, Esprit, Formula, and Trans Am

6. INSTALLATION NOTES

  • Installation uses the vehicle’s existing factory-style front sway-bar locations.
  • Safely raise and support the vehicle by the frame before beginning installation.
  • Allow the front control arms to unload while removing the original sway bar.
  • Remove the original end links, frame-bushing clamps, bushings, and front sway bar.
  • Position the UMI sway bar in the correct orientation before attaching it to the vehicle.
  • When correctly positioned at ride height, the ends of the bar should be approximately level.
  • If the bar ends angle sharply upward, the bar may be installed upside down.
  • Attach both supplied end-link assemblies finger-tight before fully tightening the frame-bushing clamps.
  • Install the polyurethane frame bushings and clamshell-style clamps at the existing frame locations.
  • Center the sway bar from side to side before final tightening.
  • The bar may be positioned slightly toward the passenger side if additional idler-arm clearance is required.
  • Lower the vehicle onto its tires or suitable supporting blocks before tightening the end links.
  • The vehicle’s weight should be on the suspension during final end-link tightening to prevent polyurethane-bushing bind.
  • End-link washers must cup toward the polyurethane bushings.
  • Do not grease the polyurethane end-link bushings.
  • Tighten the end links only until the bushings begin to bulge slightly.
  • Do not overtighten the end-link bushings.
  • UMI permits shortening the center end-link sleeves by up to 3/4 inch when necessary.
  • Additional caster, frame sag, frame damage, aftermarket control arms, or altered suspension geometry can affect the required end-link length.
  • Turn the steering completely from side to side and inspect all tie-rod, idler-arm, brake-line, control-arm, and sway-bar clearances.
  • UMI recommends having a second person assist with positioning the solid sway bar during installation.
  • If the idler-arm position is adjusted, verify the vehicle’s toe alignment before operation.
